Prefer a Silent Weapon for Survival Situations
Let's not go as far as A Quiet Place and Netflix' latest installment–The Silence as examples for survival scenarios where stealth and silence are valuable. At least, not yet.
There are very real monsters, in reality, we are powerless against and sometimes our only escape is stealth. Besides defensive situations, stealth is also necessary for offense and I mean getting to your monster, first.
I am also referring to getting food supply or hunting. Many of both big and small games are super sensitive to sound and will bolt at little sounds indicative of a hunter's presence.
This is why the primitive survivalists were effective hunters with the use of this ancient weapon–the bow and arrow. It has the element of nature in the bow and arrow which makes it perfect for hunting in the wild.

A Gun vs a DIY Longbow
Guns are hands down more effective in defense or offense, but when it comes to the question of availability, a DIY longbow takes a point.
With a gun, you don't know how long your ammo will last or when your gun will stop working. That is if you have a gun with you in the aftermath.
