As a survivalist, bow making is an essential skill to learn. Knowing how to make your own survival weapon is a necessary skill when SHTF. Want to know how to make your own bows? Check out this basic bow making crash course!
The first thing to know about bow making is that not every tree in the forest will make a good bow. There are four types of wood that have been proven to be excellent wood for bows. These are:
Bamboo
Willow
Yew
Lemon
These wood types have the necessary qualities that make a good bow. They are springy, flexible, and tough. There is no better wood to use than these four types.
Stringing You Along
The next thing you need to know about making your own bow is the string. This serves as the tension that propels the arrow forward. Of course, you’re going to need to select the best, most resilient string to ensure that it will not break when you really need it. There are 6 types to choose from, all with their distinct qualities and difficulty of procurement:
Hemp
Fish line
Linen
Nylon
Dacron
Kevlar
When you finally pick the string you want to use, bring out your wax. Waxing the string is important in securing its durability. It also protects against wear and tear. We guarantee that you will need this because you will be practicing your shots a lot.
That’s So Fletch
Of course, you can’t have a bow and not have the arrows for it. While you can certainly go ahead and buy arrows off of Amazon, being your own fletcher will be a big plus when SHTF. Not to mention that it’s going to be a skill that will be very important when the going gets tough.
It is by no means easy, since you will have to do everything from scratch. This includes fletching, smithing your arrowheads, and whittling the arrow itself. We will be talking more about this in our tutorial series below.
Weapon making is one of the most essential survival skills, and bow making is a fun and useful way to bring that skill to life. Bow making is an ancient art, practiced by our ancestors for thousands of years. Without the use and mastery of these weapons, it’s safe to say we would not be here today.
Our bow making course will tell you everything you need to know, from the history of the weapon, different kinds of bows, and finally how to make your own bows for hunting and other survival purposes.
