NYPD Officer Shot and Killed
A New York police officer died after he was shot in the head Tuesday night while chasing a robbery suspect, authorities said.
Officer Randolph Holder was shot while responding to reports of a gunman in East Harlem, and he died a few hours, Police Commissioner William J. Bratton said.
He was the fourth officer killed in the line of duty in the city in the past 11 months, according to Bratton. Nationwide, 31 police officers have been killed in the line of duty so far this year.
Suspect linked to previous shooting
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was wanted by police for questioning in connection to a previous shooting, according to a law enforcement official.
The man who police say shot and killed Holder has close to 20 prior arrests, some for violent crimes, according to NYPD records, the official said.
He also had a warrant out for his arrest and a wanted poster was created, the official said. The official could not say what that warrant was for.
The suspect was arrested four blocks away from where Holder was shot, and is in a hospital with gunshot wounds in his leg.
He is expected to be released to police custody Wednesday morning, Bratton said.
Police took three other men into custody for questioning on their possible involvement.
