How to Get Started with Homesteading
Want to Become a Homesteader but Not Sure Where to Start? Check Out These Tips
Homesteading has become really popular over the last couple of years. It seems like people are finally waking up, getting out of the rat race and deciding to pursue a simpler and more sustainable way of life.
But getting started as a homesteader can be a daunting and intimidating task, especially for those who have never owned property before. If you're not quite there yet, you can still try “urban homesteading” to see if the lifestyle is for you. Here are just a couple of things city-dwellers can do to live a more sustainable life:
- Raising backyard chickens
- Growing gardens in in raised beds, or in containers on a patio or balcony
- Canning preserved food
But if you think you're ready to buy a piece of land and really go all-in on building your homestead, there are a few things you need to consider, such as:
- Proximity to current home and loved ones
- Cost of living
- Property tax rates
- Population density
- Remoteness
- Building codes and permits in the area
- Growing season
