Farmers used these pocket knives primarily to make their living from the land. Used as an everyday tool as opposed to self-defense, the pocket knife has remained unchanged for centuries.

Around 1650, some of the first mainstream pocket knives became widely sold throughout Sheffield, England to farmers, herdsman and even gardeners as a primary tool labeled ‘the farmer knife.’ This pocket knife consisted of a pivot so that the blade may be folded into a grooved handle. By 1700 the first mass production of pocket knives began, supplying craftsman and laborers around.

I have 900 pieces in my collection. I hand sharpen all of them on a diamond hone. Any knife that I carry, which can vary day to day will get any job done that I need to do.

Living in the country, my EDC is a multi-plier, a USA made “Old Timer” three blade stockman, and a lock back from Benchmade, Cold Steel , or Gerber. Come hunting season, it is a multi-tool and a Buck “Duke” ( good steel, a great drop-pointed lock back with a 3″ blade – when it comes from the factory the edges of the handle are a little too sharp but easily taken care of) this is a very solid knife and my choice for deer and elk. It has the best blade – handle angle for getting work done.
