If it sounds paranoid, remember that it`s better to be safe than sorry. I think this is the one piece of advice you`d get from the ones who managed to escape a sinking car and got to keep living their lives together with their loved ones.

As often is the case, Mythbusters has a good episode on escaping from a sinking car:

Terrible episode that only showed that you’d drown, utterly useless.

Agreed!………What they don’t tell you is what if the door still doesn’t open? Now you’re screwed when the pressure equalizes. The answer is for about $5 you can buy a hard tipped pen that will shatter a window on one hard shot to the glass and allow you to swim out the window! Carry it in your console or handy place if ever needed.

Unless, of course, the force of the blow is absorbed by the water pressing on the window. Get the window open, or broken, before submersion.
