Road Accidents Survival Tips

This article will give you a few road accidents survival tips that just might help you when you get injured or end up dead in a car crash. We all know that getting involved in a car accident is one of the most life-threatening events that could ever happen to you.

Road Accidents Survival Tips: Surviving The Crash

Who would want to get into an accident anyway? That’s why I make the constant effort to drive defensively and obey traffic and road regulations. However, no matter how one can be too careful accidents do happen. In a worst case scenario, if it does happen to you, would you know what to do afterward?  Here are a few tips that might help.

1. Be A Defensive Driver

One way to increase your chances of survival in a road accident are as follows:

  • Always wear your seatbelt properly
  • Drive a car with up-to-date safety features
  • Store objects in the compartments which might become a possible projectile
  • Make sure your car is in top running condition with proper maintenance and regular check up of safety systems
  • Exercise good driving practices constantly
  • Don't lean too much against the dashboard or against the side of the car to prevent whiplash from expanding airbags
  • Always put both hands on the wheel

2. Remain Calm

It may be easier said than done but remaining calm on an onset of an accident will help you make the proper decisions if your vehicle is still moving at high speed. Like when and where to steer right after getting hit, when to apply the brakes, to accelerate if needed, taking steps to recover should you lose control or start to skid– just to name a few.

3. Avoid Head-On Collisions or Side Impacts

If you can still control your vehicle try to avoid immovable objects such as concrete barriers of large trees. As much as you can avoid side impacts from oncoming cars after getting hit, the greater the chances of you not getting injured seriously.

4. Don’t Duck or Brace

Ducking will take you away from the effective zone of the airbags or your seatbelt while bracing may cause your limbs to get in the way of the airbag. Bracing also could just break your bones should the force of the impact go beyond the strength of your muscles and your bones.

5. Check Yourself Or Your Passengers

Once you come to a halt, immediately switch off the engine, turn on your hazard light and check yourself or your passengers for injuries. If you can, try to attend to those who are injured first.

6. Have Survival Tools at Your Disposal

The following tools may spell a big difference between life and death:

  • Seatbelt cutter – in case your seatbelt doesn’t release or gets jammed
  • Glass breaker – for breaking windows or windshield if door gets jammed or blocked
  • Fire extinguisher – for putting out a fire, of course
  • First Aid Kit or 72-hour Bug Out Bag – This will definitely come in handy for treating injuries or surviving for at least 72 hours if you’re stranded

Check out my favorite solution the Evac Emergency Auto Tool, small enough to fit on your keychain with the ability to cut your seatbelt, break glass and a built-in whistle.

7. Safety First

Your safety and the safety of other motorists are next to nothing right after an accident. If your vehicle is a potential threat to other oncoming traffic, it is best you move it to the far side of the road to avoid a second accident. If you choose not to do so for insurance and possible legal obligations, then wait for the police to show up.

8. When To Exit Your Vehicle

If your car is totally wrecked or you choose to wait for the police, you should assess the situation before exiting your car. Are there potential hazards nearby like oncoming traffic or a downed electric post? Is fuel leaking? Is your car on fire?

9. Call 911

Once the dust has settled, you should call 911 immediately. If you can’t find your phone then try to ask for help from passing vehicles.
