When natural disasters strike, you can expect the power to be out. The dangerous forces of nature can strike anytime, anywhere and often very quickly. Problems will be encountered especially at night. When a flood, hurricane, blizzard, earthquake or tornado hits your area, visibility becomes paramount. In these situations, knowing how to make a spotlight on the fly can be a handy skill to have.

DIY Projects for Preppers: How to Make a Spotlight Out of a Small Flashlight

Materials Needed:
- LED flashlight
- magnifying glass, 5 in. diameter or largest possible
- two 2×2″ planks, long and short
- velcro straps
- power drill
- drill bit the same size as the magnifying glass handle
- black paint
- optional: tripod
Step 1. Mounting for the magnifying glass.
Drill a hole into one end of the long plank. Put the handle of the magnifying glass into the hole.
Step 2. Mount the short plank.
It serves as the riser so that the flashlight's beam will be centered on the lens.
Step 3. Mount the light source.
Place the flashlight on the riser.
Step 4. Strap it down.
Use two strips of velcro fasteners to secure the flashlight and the riser. You can keep it a little loose to allow the assembly to slide for beam adjustments.
Step 5. Paint it black.
Doing so will reduce glare. You can also do this before Step 1.
Done!
You can also mount the assembly on a tripod for more control.
Emergency lighting should be one of the items on your survival kit. Keep a small flashlight in your bag or pocket. Big and bright flashlights should be stored in your home. Remember to keep fresh batteries along with them.
The importance of lighting can never be stressed enough. You will be able to check your surroundings, if your loved ones are safe and if your properties are safe and secure. Fixing broken parts of the house in the dark will not be too difficult. In survival situations, lighting is as important as food and water so do your best in choosing the right lighting products. This will ensure that you are prepared for anything.
