It is springtime again, while this season is really enjoyable because the trees and beautiful flowers start to bloom, some are suffering from seasonal allergies brought by springtime. Pollens from trees, grasses, and flowers are the common cause of spring allergies.

When they are inhaled and enter the body, the immune system treats them like bacteria and viruses causing the immune system to release antibodies and attack the allergens.

This reaction of the immune system triggers the release of histamine in the blood causing symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, coughing, and watery eyes.

Spring allergies can be dangerous to people with asthma which can lead to narrowing of the airways making it difficult to breathe.

People who are prone to allergies during springtime should know how to deal with them to avoid further health issues. The following tips can be very helpful to survive spring allergies.

Consult Your Doctor

To survive spring allergies, it is best to visit your doctor or an allergist once the common symptoms of spring allergies occur to get the necessary tests and treatments.

A skin test or blood test may be performed to verify if you have allergies. If you have allergies, your health provider may prescribe drugs to treat the allergies.

Although there are anti-allergy drugs that you can buy over the counter, it is best to ask your doctor before taking medications.

Some allergy medications have side effects and cannot be taken for more than a few days so always seek your doctor’s advice.

Allergy shots may also be recommended by your doctor to help your body eventually develop tolerance to allergens.

Keep your home clean especially the areas where dust and pollens can sit in like shelves and carpets. Vacuum carpets more frequently but always remember to wear a protective mask.

It can be very helpful to have an air purifier to control airborne pollens inside your home. Make sure to clean air filters regularly and keep the doors and windows closed.

Wash your bedding, pillowcases, sheets, and clothes as often as possible because pollens tend to stick on fabrics. Controlling pollens in your home can be very helpful to survive spring allergies.

Airborne pollens are usually high in the morning and to avoid them, stay indoors.

Although it can be nice to jog and go out in the morning, just do your morning exercise indoors and save yourself from developing spring allergies.

If it cannot be helped and you want to go outside to enjoy the beautiful day, as much as possible schedule your outdoor activities not in the early mornings or go outdoors when the pollen count outside is low.

  • Wear a protective allergy face mask if you have outdoor activities like gardening and grass mowing.
  • Take a shower after your outdoor activities and wash your hair thoroughly.
  • To survive spring allergies, you have to avoid exposing yourself to airborne pollens as much as possible.

It is possible to survive spring allergies with proper management and adherence to your doctor’s advice.
