Self-Defense for Women | Avoid Being a Victim

What would you do when someone suspicious is following you as you walk home from work or school? Nowadays, we can't be too complacent about our surroundings, especially in these tough times when the crime rate is up and rape cases are on a relentless rise.

Ladies, you should take the necessary precautions to avoid sexual assaults because, for all we know, some nympho might be silently waiting for its next victim. Learn these self-defense techniques tips below and protect yourself at all costs!

1. Look Them in the Face

|

If you feel you are being followed, look them straight in the face and ask them questions or make small talk.

It is important to see their faces for you to clearly identify them. This may lessen the would-be attacker's interest to make you a target.

2. Shout Stop or Stay Back

When you see someone approaching, clench your fist in front of you and shout “Stay back!” or “Stop!” as loud as you can. Most attackers will leave you alone if you show you're not afraid to fight back.

Shouting is a great form of self-defense against rapists.

3. Carry a Pepper Spray

|

If you have pepper spray, hold it out in plain sight while shouting. Pepper spray contains active ingredients from chili peppers that are distinctly pungent and very hurtful to the eyes.

This will deter the would-be attacker from coming toward you. Be sure you are willing and able to use it.

4. Pinch Them

If the attacker holds you around your waist from the back, pinch them under their arms or between the armpit and the elbow.

You can also squeeze them as hard as you can in the upper inner thigh. Those places hurt like hell when pinched.

5. Hit Them in the Groin

|

After the initial hit, always go for the groin. In a fair fight, going for the groin is frowned upon but when you’re attacked, it won't be a fair fight.

After giving a solid hit to the groin, the attacker will think twice about attacking you. This will give you a chance to make a quick exit and call for help.

Striking the groin is a very effective form of self-defense against rapists.

6.  Bend Their Fingers

If the attacker puts their hands on you, grab the first two fingers and bend them back as far as you can while applying as much downward pressure on them as possible. Try it on yourself if you want, it is quite painful.

7. Practice Situational Awareness

|

Situational awareness should always be practiced. Be alert and check your surroundings, especially if you are walking alone.

Walk with someone you know if possible. If you notice odd behavior from a stranger, trust your gut and do what is necessary.

Acting this way may seem a little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the person did have any wicked intent. Not all effective self-defense comes in the form of combat.

Awareness can deter any life-threatening situation.

8.  Use Your Elbow

Your elbow is an extremely efficient self-defense tool. Elbow strikes can leave your attacker out cold or completely unconscious.

If you are close enough, do not hesitate to hit the perpetrator with your elbow with all your strength.

9. Toss Your Wallet Away

|

Do not simply hand your purse or wallet if a mugger asks for it. Instead, throw it away from you. Odds are, they are more interested in the money in your wallet or purse than they are with you.

If they go for the money, RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! Running is a valid self-defense training one can easily do.

10.  Kick Out the Tail Lights

If they force you inside the trunk, kick the back of the taillights and get your arms out there! Stick your arms and hands out until someone sees you.

This has saved many lives. Also, keep in mind all newer cars have an emergency trunk release you can pull to get out of the trunk.

The key here is to listen. If you feel your attacker has stopped at an intersection with people nearby, that would be a safe time to exit the vehicle.

Chances are, they will attempt to flee the scene and not try to get you back in the trunk anymore.

11. Start Your Engine and Leave

|

Most women have the habit of staying in their cars and doing things like checking their phones or fixing their bags before they actually leave the premises. This makes you a major target and is a huge no-no.

As soon as you are in your car, start the engine and leave. Do not sit around balancing your checkbook.

That can be done as soon as you get home.

12. Stay Alert When Entering Your Car

Speaking of cars in a parking lot or garage, these are the safety measures to keep in mind:

  • Be alert: Look around before entering your car. Check the passenger side and the back seat as this is where perpetrators usually hide when they gain access to your vehicle.
  • Enter your car through the passenger door if you are parked next to a van. This will feel and look silly, but it’s better than being abducted. Many attackers will surprise their victims by forcing them into the van while the victim is attempting to enter their vehicle.
  • Take a good look at the parked cars on both sides of the car. If you see a suspicious male sitting in the seat near you, turn around and go back to where you came from and ask a security guard or a police officer to walk you to your vehicle. It is better to be silly yet safe rather than become a victim.

13. Take the Elevator

|

NEVER take the stairs alone at night unless you have no other option. If at all possible, take the elevator.

Stairwells are notorious for being the perfect place to commit a crime.

Women should know how to fight and protect themselves. Watch this video from Final Round Training and find out how you can escape a rapist:

Take all of these things into consideration when heading out at night. This might make you feel awkward and may not ward off all attacks, but anything you can do to help yourself is worth it.

After all, you are better off paranoid than dead. Stay safe, ladies!

    14. Walk with purpose or authority. Walking while distracted make you easy prey. Walking with authority implies command presence and situational awareness, both of which deter attacks.

Thank you for the response Varian!
I cant believe I forgot to add that one! Yes you definitely want to walk with an air of confidence, stand up straight, quick but not frantic steps and with your keys in hand. You also need to be sure to keep your head up and look straight ahead, make use of your peripheral vision and hearing to keep aware of your surroundings.

      Thanks again

Along those lines, don’t look the victim, don’t act the victim. Rarely will a perp just hop in his car and attack the first person he sees. A mark is waited for patiently, and then is capitalized on. Most of the time people that are attacked have put themselves in the position to be attacked. They may have even been watched for some time. It isn’t unheard of to be attacked by a person you know, even in passing.

Have an alert schedule. Red, yellow, green, white. The only time white is when you are sleeping. Rarely green, and only in assured secure situations.

Most of the time yellow. Any time in public a yellow alert will mean aware of surroundings, never compromising yourself by entering a questionable situation, showing yourself as aware of every single person around you. Yellow alert means asking to be escorted to a car or location instead of doing it yourself so you aren’t being too forward (that is the usual reality). Yellow alert means no cell phone conversations while walking around in public, particularly when you could be surprised like in a parking lot or places lacking public presence. Yellow means paying attention to your surroundings all the time. It means looking every person in the eye every time you enter a public place. Yellow means ready for red.

Red is fight or flight. Flight first, fight second. If necessary, fight first, flight second. Red means survival at all costs.

With the exception of a special forces trained aggressor, white to red is impossible for most anyone. Green to red is nearly impossible. Yellow to red is what keeps panic out, and quick, determined decisions in.

    ChewyBee

You have set up a color code system that is misleading and counter-intuitive. Long ago Col. Jeff Cooper devised THE system by which most trainers work.

1: WHITE–head in the clouds, earphones on, reading, and totally oblivious to anything and everybody around you. You are the one the predator wants to find.

2: YELLOW–observant of your surroundings and people’s behavior. Avoiding blind spots on route of travel-building corners, alleyways, and looking back every so often, along with meeting others in the eye as you come upon them.

3: ORANGE– much heightened sense of awareness. Something doesn’t seem right. Trust your gut. That’s your sub-conscious fitting together a pattern of circumstances and behavior that warns you there could well be danger here and now for you. Time to move along a little faster than the crowd or veer off route to establish whether you are being followed or not.

4: RED–Fight or Flight. If you can run your way out of danger do so. If not, look for anything-garbage can, pop bottle, stick or anything else to use as a weapon. You should have your CCW and now is the time to draw it. Many times just the sight of a firearm will scare of an attacker. Those stoked up on PCP, Meth, and certain other drugs may not be deterred. Even if you don’t have to shoot, call the PD, explain what happened, and wait for them. YOU must be the first to report the incident; otherwise the perp may claim you drew a gun on him for no reason and then you will have problems.

5:–If you do have to shoot, give your name and address, which you are legally obligated to do, and have I.D. with you. Tell the police that just as soon as your lawyer is present, you will speak with them. Don’t run away or touch anything, for obvious reasons. Call for an ambulance if the perp is down and no longer a threat. DO NOT continue to shoot as the perp escapes or is down and no longer constitues a threat. If you do you could be facing a long prison sentence. Having spent 29 days in jail waitng to go to trial on a B&E at age 18, I can, as a 65 year old with a full pardon, tell you it’s no fun, and not an experience you, as a law abiding citizen want to experience.

ChewyBees means well, but it is quite apparent he has not carefully studied the works of the Masters–Cooper, Ayoob, et. al. Folks, SPEND THE MONEY on Cooper and Ayoob. There are others out there too that are very good-just check their bonafides before you plunk down your hard earned money. All have some differences, but they all agree on one ting: When you are certain your life is in mortal danger, you’d better be damned certain where your target is, what’s in front and to the sides of it, and what’s behind it, and is there any chace a bullet could pass through or miss entirely and ricochet to hit some innocent person!

The last thing you want is to be found gulity of negligent homocide. Not only will you go to prison no matter how good your lawyer is, you will, unless you are a sociopath, have it on your conscience forever. Even if you are totally justified, every man I ever met who had been in combat in the Nam said that the first one you kill changes you in a way that isn’t easily explained. I agree with that, and still remember the first. IF you can possibly avoid it, in civil life you must put up with some verbal crap (that otherwise you’d punch them out for)if you are armed. Just letting them see you are armed can be construed as “brandishing” or “flashing”, and you lose your liscense. You won’t get it back either. You irresponsible and foolish-I don’t want you out there with a gun either.

As for going from “white” to “red” in a flash, consider how many reports you’ve read and watched on TV of parents going from “ho-hum” to full throttle action when one of their chidren are in danger. It can be done, but individually you are much better off to learn the REAL color code of Cooper, et. al., and incorporate them into your daily life. Just ease into it-you don’t need to be hyper-vigilant as does a soldier in Afghanistan. The only time you should be “white” is when you’re asleep, and even then your sub-conscious is working to protect you: it’s like gravity–it never quits working.

This is a bunch of crap that will make women think that they are ready for an assault ! It says nothing about attacking the rapists eyes or throat ! Carrying a gun or a knife ! Pinching them ?? Shouting stop ??? And women just so you know the groin isn’t an off switch ! Most guys have at one time been hit in the groin and know that it isn’t fatal and men have grown up protecting their nuts, so hitting them in the groin isn’t that easy ! This article is shit !

I don’t mean to sound mean, but these are a bit lame. How about gouging out their eyes, carry and use those small air jornes. If a guy is going to rape you, tossing your wallet is useless. He will just pick it up as he leaves.
Throat punch or elbow to the throat, stopp his feet, you need to do much better than this.
