Stunned bystanders though he was trying to kill himself and called the police, reports Oesterreich newspaper .

Cops turned up just as he was fishing out the money.

He is now trying to claim a share.

Investigations have so far found no criminal act in the area in which such a sum of money had been lost, a spokesman for the Vienna police said.

“The boy said he wanted to bring it to the police, but the question is whether the police found it or the boy,” the police spokesman said.

n Austria, anyone who finds cash and brings it to the police can claim between 5 and 10 per cent of the sum.

They also have the right to receive the whole amount if its rightful owner cannot be identified within a year.
