The Cheap & Easy Way to Make Your Own Fish Hook
Turn your soda can tabs into fish hooks in just a few simple steps! This survival hack requires only a few items, and it's a great way to recycle the soda tab you'd be throwing out anyway. Keep a few in your tackle box for your next fishing trip, and add some to your bug out bag as a multi-use survival tool. With this quick and easy tutorial, you'll never have to buy a fish hook again.
What you'll need to make your fish hook:
- Pocket blade
- Soda can tab
- Scissors
- Multitool
- Paracord
- Diagonal cut pliers
- Lighter
How to make your fish hook:
Step 1: Cut the soda can tab.
Start by cutting an opening in the bottom hole in the tab. Make sure that you cut in at a slant, and then start cutting away as much metal as you can around the hook. File the hook into a sharp point.
Step 2: File the hook.
Use your multitool to file down the sharp edges in the hole.

Step 3: Make a hole for the fishing line.
Use your pocket blade to expand the small hole at the top of the hook. This is where you will tie the line onto the hook.
Step 4: Cut your paracord.
Cut a piece of paracord that is about 4-6 inches in length.
Step 5: Insert your hook.
The ends of your fish hook should be sharp enough to insert into the cord. Cut any excess cord.
Step 6: Light the end.
Light the top end of the paracord, and leave the bottom end frayed. Toss it into your tackle box, and you're good to go!
