    As an Exercise Specialist with a few thousand clients under my belt, 30 instructors, 2 exercise studios, certifications up the yingyang…ICE water gets one hydrated faster than room or body temperature. Scientists do not understand the why of this as yet. But it is true. Never rehydrate using any liquid with ‘electrolytes’ or anything other than pure plain ice cold water. Electrolytes and other foods in your water causes that water to be digested first before it is allowed into one’s blood stream. Pure water ONLY. Athletes will have trained their bodies by carbohydrate ‘loading’ …making their own glycogen/blood sugar hold as many calories as possible. Easily available calories…but only 25 miles of calories (100 calories per mile whether you run or walk or crawl) so 2500 calories thereabouts can be stored in the blood stream. Less for couch potatoes. Athletes’ bodies know how to keep their core temperature down! To do a marathon, one needs to have a body that can sweat very well. Sweat is what cools us down, as long as there is moving air to wick the heat away from evaporation! Athletes need far more water added to their bodies because they are losing so much more than…couch potatoes. Pure water. No electrolytes!! No fat or protein 3 or 4 hours before a race. Carbohydrates are processed in 15 minutes, fat and protein take up to 3 hours to 3 days to digest. The 2 nights before a race one needs to carbohydrate load.

    During a marathon, fat is necessary for fuel. But our brain and proprioceptors and spinal cord or CNS need glycogen, blood sugar for fuel. To be able to THINK and move with coordination. That is why the carbohydrate loading. To do a marathon? 25 miles? At 100 calories that equals 2500 calories. Guess how many calories are in a pound of body fat?? 4000. After the bodily needs, the amount of calories we humans can enlist from a pound of body fat is 3500. One pound of body fat can carry us 35 MILES. But without blood glycogen our brains go whoo woo. Like people who skip breakfast only to be driven to eat a donut because of low blood sugar? They like, DROVE to work with no blood sugar thus no coordination or abilty to truly THINK to do well for their bosses? Irresponsible. Let’s not talk about the asinine trend for fasting…ugh!
