One of the biggest concerns among preppers is food security. Many of the problems that cause food scarcity around the world could happen here.
While the world produces enough food, it often does not get to the people who need it. One of the biggest problems, especially in the industrial world, is food waste. Whether it never makes it to market because it doesn’t look right, or gets thrown out because it was forgotten at the back of a fridge, almost a third of the food produced in the U.S. is wasted.
This is an area where France is starting to make some big changes. Recently “ugly food” stores have been making an effort to reduce food waste by selling produce that’s deemed too ugly to sell in traditional grocery stores. Now the French government is taking action. Large supermarkets that have unspoiled food the plan to throw out will now have to be given to charities.

The law will also introduce an education programme about food waste in schools and businesses. It follows a measure in February to remove the best-before dates on fresh foods.
The measures are part of wider drive to halve the amount of food waste in France by 2025. According to official estimates, the average French person throws out 20kg-30kg of food a year – 7kg of which is still in its wrapping. The combined national cost of this is up to €20bn.
