One of the most crucial wilderness survival skills is being able to identify edible plants. But surprisingly, few survivalists have mastered this particular skill.

When it comes to wilderness survival, you don't want to take any chances. Many plants look safe to eat but are actually not. Assuming that a plant is safe to eat just because it “looks” safe is a common wilderness survival mistake, and it can be deadly.

Before bugging out in a SHTF situation, or even going on a routine camping trip, you should be well-versed in the flora of the area and know what can be eaten and what should be left alone.

Wilderness Survival: What to Eat in the Wild

The following graphic from UK Oak Doors is a great guide to edible and inedible plants commonly found in the wilderness. While these are far from the only plants you may come across, this will give you a good idea of what to watch out for and how to tell edible plants apart from inedible ones.

Like we said, this is not an exhaustive list.

But these are some of the most common plants you will come across in the wild.

You should commit these facts to memory and test your knowledge the next time you are hiking and camping. But remember — if you'r ever in doubt, leave it! You never want to take your chances eating a plant that you're not certain is safe.
