15 Uses For Honey

Honey, is one of my favorite toppings…

I eat it on toast, biscuits, pancakes, tea, coffee…

Heck sometimes I just eat it raw!

But there’s got to be more to this sticky sweet goodness than just a snack …right?

You bet there is!

In fact, there are all sorts of uses for honey! Aside from being a tasty snack that never expires, there are dozens of other alternative uses for honey including a a variety of home and health-related applications.

Honey has been in use by us for thousands of years, so we’ve had plenty of time to play around with it and find out all sorts of unique uses for honey.

How many uses for honey can you think of?

Here is just a short list of uses for honey that I came up with

15 uses for honey that you have never thought of:

  1. Antiseptic – Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical used for cleaning wounds and helping them heal quickly. Honey happens to contain a good amount of the chemical. It only needs to be released by diluting the substance in water or body fluids. When applied on an open wound, the glucose, contained by honey, is diluted and gradually releases hydrogen peroxide. The substance facilitates your wound’s faster healing. Due to its viscous consistency, it also prevents wounds from sticking to the dressing and the appearance of scars.
  2. Liquid Allergy Pill – Though still not scientifically proven, the daily consumption of locally harvested honey is said to strengthen your immune system and work to reduce any allergies you have to plant pollen. I’ve tried it and while I still keep my alavert on hand in the spring I have noticed an improvement.
  3. Skin Moisturizer – Honey, when mixed with eggs and some flour, is an effective skin moisturizer. Best of all, it is gently formulated, so it can be used by people with sensitive skin. Mix four tablespoons of honey with a couple of egg whites and a few tablespoons of flour, depending on your desired consistency. Stir the mixture until it thickens. When the mixture is ready, you can use it as a hand and body lotion or a moisturizing face mask, eliminating the effects of dry skin.
  4. Acne Remover – Honey might be a gentle skin moisturizer but it is certainly tough on acne. With constant exposure to the bee fluid, pimples eventually wither and fade. Apply a small amount of honey on the pimply regions of your face. Cover them with adhesive bandages. Soon, your zit attack will be nothing more than a distant memory.
  5. Energy Booster – Why buy palpitation-inducing energy drinks when you already have honey? Mix honey with some water then drink the solution. Honey’s glucose content will be absorbed by the brain and in the bloodstream, reducing fatigue in the process. You’ll be healthy and quite happy just by consuming the simple solution.
  6. Improves Blood Flow – Honey, being rich in glucose, is known to improve the blood flow through the fortification of blood’s formation. Glucose provides energy in the bloodstream, which is distributed throughout the body. As a result, the blood produced has the proper consistency, flowing smoothly through the blood vessels. Glucose is believed to prevent capillary damage due to its ability to improve your blood flow.
  7. Substitute Honey for Sugar in Baking. For every cup of sugar a recipe calls for, replace it with 3/4 cup of honey. For best results, add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and reduce another liquid in your recipe by 1/4 cup. Also, reduce the oven temperature by 25 degrees.
  8. Relax in the tub – Add a few tablespoons of honey to your bath, for sweeter smelling, softer feeling water. It’s a little secret I use when running a bath for my wife
  9. Preserve fruit – Jam is so five years ago; show you’re truly cutting edge by preserving your fruits in a honey sauce. All it takes is one part honey to ten parts water and then covering your berries. Pretty much the closest you’re ever going to get to bottled summer
  10. Treatment for Sore Throat – Some people believe that honey is an even better treatment for coughs and colds than over-the-counter medicine. To create the sore throat-relieving serum, squeeze the juice from a lemon and mix it with some honey. Stir the mixture until both ingredients blend. Drink the solution. After a few moments, you will realize that your sore throat has been cured, or at least reduced. Just continue to make more rounds until you are finally free from colds.
  11. Remedy for Burns – A burn is not only painful, the marks also last for a good number of days before healing up. By applying honey on your burn, the hydrogen peroxide released cleans the wound and soothes the inflammation. As a result, the burn marks will heal in a few days with less pain. Use honey as a dressing for maximum results.
  12. Antibacterial Solution – Bacteria and germs won’t survive when covered in honey, given its acidic pH balance and viscous base. The microorganisms will be trapped in the sticky acidic base, which is too abrasive for their exteriors, killing them off eventually. Apply honey on a wound, scratches or an inflamed region, in conjunction with an antiseptic. You’ll be surprised at how fast your injury heals .
  13. Relaxant for Anxiety and Nervousness – Anxiety and nervousness are the enemies of a healthy mind and in any situation, especially when you are in survival mode, you need to be clear headed and calm. Honey’s nutrients produce a calming effect, especially when taken in significant amounts. No wonder some consider it a part of the breakfast of champions. Honey can also be mixed with a suitable beverage for a good night’s sleep.
  14. Condition Damaged Hair – Simply add a teaspoon of honey to your regular shampoo. This will smooth your damaged locks. You can also combine it with olive oil for a deeper conditioning. Let it soak for 20 minutes with your hair wrapped in a towel before shampooing as usual.
  15. Remove Parasites – I have never had to do this and Hopefully you’ll never have to use this trick either. I have seen many different articles stating that honey works well to remove parasites.

The recipe seems simple enough: combine equal parts honey, vinegar and water. Then drink. The combination of these three ingredients is  supposedly the perfect parasite killer.

Has anyone ever tried this or do you know of some other uses for honey that I missed?

I’m using a raw honey compound to heal a wound. I had an operation and one part of the wound would not heal so we started using this honey mix and I’m healing fast. We used this a few years ago on my wife and it healed her. The compound is from Meadowlake farms and has honey comb in it too, about $16 for a jar. I recomend it highly.

Honey is awesome for healing wounds. But New Zealand MANUKA honey is by far the best. The Germans and New Zealand have both done studies on this particular honey. They have proven that is is the ONLY THING that heals MRSA (flesh eating bacteria)on contact.Given that most people have to get I.V. antibiotics to kill MRSA and even then it often resists even the strongest antibiotics. It is also being used for stomach ulcers, and gut problems.( Google manuka honey and thousands of sites come up for info and studies).
It is expensive, but well worth the price, since it could save your life or limbs.(About the price of your deductible for really strong antibiotics)! In a SHTF situation, it could save your life if antibiotics are scarce.
NZ government now has it labeled as to the strength of the healing compound, it can vary from 12 to 24 in strength. I would buy the strongest, why mess around. You can buy it at your local health food store or online, just check the number for it’s strength.

I so wished I had known this almost seven years ago. After the amputation of my leg due to cancer, I contracted MRSA. I subsequently had complications, contracted MRSA two or three times again! I think I may have to look into this and always have some on hand. I have been told that I am “colonized” with the MRSA. Thank you for writing about this honey.

Living in Germany I often frequent “foreign” resturants (non German). During the last bitter winter, I had a very bad cough, brought on by the flu, just to add some “flavor” to my smokers cough. I was at a Hungarian resturant and started having a coughing “fit”, and the resturant owner said, go and get a pound of honey, and 5 lemons. Squeeze the lemons into a juice and mix it with the entire pound of honey and your cough will be gone “tomorrow”, drink it several times a day until it is all gone (the liquid). I thought, worth a try, and sure enough, to this day, even my smoker cough is gone. Amazing stuff from little bees.

Yes!! Many years ago my pediatrician, upon being awakened early, gave me something I am sure he dredged from his grandma’s attic. Use a quarter to a third cup of honey. Stir in a teaspoon of baking soda. Then add a teaspoon of lemon juice. The stuff foams up like cake icing/ Administer a glallop!! (translated a a heaping spoonful) to a child or adult who has the flu and is barfing all over. Repeat every half hour or so. Have gotten models to their jobs with this solution, not to say relieving my kids of their upset stomachs. Apparently the honey holds the bubbles created by the baking soda – lemon mix which produced carbon dioxide. Don’t know why it works, but it does.

My dad (deceased in 1997) was a beekeeper and he had his honey, vinegar & water tonic daily. He lived to be 90 and had excellent health except that he died from Alzheimer’s. He rarely ever had a cold,a little arthritis but was a believer in his honey remedies. My grandchildren like a warm drink in winter of a squeeze of lemon juice, teasp. of honey and warmed in microwave for a minute. yum…. LOCAL honey grown within a mile of two of home is the best for allergies. The bees collect the same pollen that causes your allergies.

Years ago (we had just moved to Miami) my 8 yr old sister got a bad case of impetigo(sp?),which is a nasty tropical skin infection, on her thumb. Nothing worked. The doctor couldn’t cure it, even with an anti-biotic. A neighbor, an old Florida girl, told mom to pour honey on it, wrap it in gauze, keep it dry, and in a few days it would be gone. It worked. Now – 50 years later, we still use it. Last week, we had a friend staying with us who had a horrible infection on his foot from wearing wet boots. The bottom of his foot and between his toes was cracked, bleeding, and very painful. He had tried the typical antibacterial ointment and was going to go to the E.R. But, we wrapped it with the honey & gauze. And in two days, it was healed. We alaways have a jar of honey in the kitchen and bathroom.

Back in the late 1930’s my mother and older brother took part in a study re: ARTHRITIS by Dr. Jarvis (Barre, VT).
The results were published in his book, “ARTHRITIS AND FOLK MEDICINE”. The combination of HONEY and APPLE CIDER VINEGAR have been proven to be very effective in combating ARTHRITIS. Combine 1 Tbsp. honey and 1 Tbsp. ORGANIC APPLE CIDER VINEGAR with 6 ounces warm water. Drink daily.
You may not see immediate results, but keep it up! Arthritis is a cumulative condition which usually develops over a period of years. You can expect to see noticeable improvement in a few weeks. I, at age 70, personally use the formula internally FOUR TIMES DAILY.

Honey is also great for getting rid of splinters that resist other methods of removal.

My mother got a bad wood splinter that drive straight into her finger… she had to resort to going to one of those instant care places and they did minor surgery to get it out to the tune of $300 bucks (she doesn’t have insurance).

Then, a few months later, she got another bad wood splinter (she has a wood shop!) and she refused to spend another $300 to get it taken care of. A bit of Googling and she found that honey might do the trick. And it sure did!

Make sure the splinter hasn’t sealed over. Pick at it with a sterilized needle if you need to, to make sure that it’s opened up. Then cover it with honey, and then cover the honey with a band-aid or other method that prevents the honey from drying out. Check it a couple times a day, refreshing the honey dressing. The honey will either help the body to dissolve the splinter, or help it to work itself out of the body.

I’m sceptical about your description for preserving fruit with honey. I’ve always been taught that honey mixed with a little water starts a fermentation process, and that’s what lead to the discovery of mead. I’ve learned that one can preserve rosehips straight in honey for a great cough/cold remedy, however the rosehips are dry (not dried out) and the honey is not diluted. Have you tried preserving your fruit this way? Does it actually work? I’d like to know.

Honey, to me, is God’s most treasured gift to man, after His son and I liked the article about it however, you missed some of the most important aspects of Honey, vinegar and water.

I suffered from Vertigo for six years and was directed to use honey, apple-cider vinegar and water to cure it. It did in six months. Not only that I have not had to go to see a doctor in 30 odd years, mostly, I believe because of the therapeutic properties of the honey.
    Believe me , I am a believer.

Joe, add anti-viral to honey’s properties. I think it was Dr. Mercola’s article I read stating it is anti-viral. I have COPD and I get asmatic bronchitis from colds and flues. Tried using a teaspoon or tablespoon daily and it worked! Usually I have to go to a doctor that will (rare nowdays) give me antibiotics, steriods, and inhaler to get over viruses. I’m 61 and my imune system is shot. This honey wasn’t even local, but it was pure natural honey (not the $1 a bottle kind). Thanks for the info on it’s other uses! I’m making a copy for further reference. Thanks again!

Firstly, and I believe most importantly you left out that honey to achieve any of the benefits you recommend completely, must be raw, natural, wild or organic, semi-filtered or non-filtered is best and never heated above hive temperature, 110 degrees, thus containing remnants of pollen, propolis, royal jelly and wax. When pasteurized and filtered the active enzymes and healing benefits, anti-biotic properties, benefits of pollen, proplis and royal jelly, etc. are gone and you’re left with great tasting sugar. Raw honey is the only food that includes all the substances necessary to sustain life…or so I have read.
You left out a few of the benefits when honey is used as a catalyst and synergistic ingredient with various common herbs and spices…. primarily cinnamon. These can be researched but as an active user of raw honey for a long time , with cinnamon I think there’s truth to it. Honey and Cinnamon may be beneficial in. Strengthening the Immunity, improving anti-viral response, improving white blood cell count, speeding digestion, reducing bad Cholesterol, achieving weight lose, assisting with bladder infections, helping with insomnia and possible improvement to your sex drive.
Also as a survivalist honey never goes bad…remnants of honey, editable were found in King Tuts tomb…about 4,000 year old honey…great shelf life…buy a 5 gal. pail…about 2 dollars a pound or so….number one on my survival check list…

I sell mine for around $1 an ounce, depending on packaging! 6 ounce plastic bottle is $5.00, 12 ounce plastic bottle is $8.00, glass is $10.00, quart mason jar is $45.00! I have five hives and I’m currently out of honey. I sell my wax to quilters at around .50 cents an ounce.

I have canned peaches, pears, cherries, applesauce in a very light honey syrup instead of sugar. They are delicious, do not ferment and we think much healthier than using sugar. The jars never last for over two years with all of the family eating them so I do not know about the long term result.

Years ago when I was young. I and my siblings were raised by our grandparents. When one of us came down with a cold or flu, my grandfather would make a solution of honey, lemon juice, and a half shot of whiskey. It tasted great. The honey and lemon cured the ailment and the whiskey relaxed us to allow a good night’s sleep. I wish I had known about honey working on MRSA. I spent 9 months of 2011 in the hospital due to MRSA, and had to have my right hand amputated. Although too late to save my hand, thanks for the information.

My husband (now deceased) used to suffer allergies terribly when we lived in Californai. Someone recommended I have him chew (like gum) honey comb. I did, which he didn’t have much faith in, but with my persistence, he noticed his allergies giving him less and less trouble until he realized he was not bothered with his allergies at all. We all used honey a lot too in other ways. God and Nature working together.

I received this from a friend about a month ago. Looks like it is the best hope a lot of us have.

    Cinnamon and Honey…Whoever thought?

Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. It will do what some call turning to sugar. In reality, honey is always honey. However, when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will do what I rather call “crystallizing.” When this happens, I loosen the lid, boil some water, and put the honey container in the hot water, turn off the heat and let it liquefy. It is then as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. To do so will kill the enzymes in the honey.

Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a ‘Ram Ban’ (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases.. Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases.

Today’s science says that, even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, in its issue dated 17 January,1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists:

    HEART DISEASES:
Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also, those who have already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack.. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada , various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and veins..

    ARTHRITIS:
Arthritis patients may take daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated, practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.

    BLADDER INFECTIONS:
Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder..

    CHOLESTEROL:
Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured.. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

    COLDS:
Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses..

    UPSET STOMACH:
Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.

    GAS:
According to the studies done in India and Japan , it is revealed that if Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

    IMMUNE SYSTEM:
Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacterial and viral diseases.

    INDIGESTION:
Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.

    INFLUENZA:
A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ‘ Ingredient’ which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.

    LONGEVITY:
Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Take four spoons of honey, one spoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans also increase and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old..

    PIMPLES:
Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water.. If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root.

    SKIN INFECTIONS:
Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.

    WEIGHT LOSS:
Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

    CANCER:
Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month three times a day.

    FATIGUE:
Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts, are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week.

    BAD BREATH:
People of South America , first thing in the morning, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water, so their breath stays fresh throughout the day..

    HEARING LOSS:
Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing.

Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!

#9. Preserve fruit – Are you saying that the honey preserves or sweetens the fruit? IE It still needs to be properly canned??
#10. Treatment for Sore Throat – You forgot the whiskey for a cough syrup!! 40 years ago, mom would mix up honey, whiskey and concentrated lemon juice to calm a bad cough. I still do likewise. The whiskey does a great job in thinning the honey and helping the throat.

I used the honey, vinegar, and water for 4-5 months and at the end of it I no longer have to take prilosec – otc twice daily as I had for the previous 6 years. I now only have to drink a mixture maybe once a month. The taste takes some getting used to but the end result was well worth the “eewww” factor. I used to wake up several times a week while on prilosec 2 times a day to my acid reflux flooding into my sinuses and inhaling some into my lungs. Now that is a world of pain I wouldn’t wish on my enemy. I’ve been off the prilosec for over 2 years now and as I said I only drink the mixture once in a great while. The mixture I used was 1/2 cup of warm water, 2 1/2 teaspoons vinegar, and ab out 1 tablespoon of honey

If I remember right, the main help is the Vinegar. Of course the Honey would surely make it more tolerable. I will need to try that as lately I have had to resort again to generic ‘acid reducers’ for reoccurring indigestion.

You might find that digestive enzymes are what you need. The vinegar does help with the protein, but a good enzyme combination replaces what we lose as we age.

“Honey happens to contain a good amount of the chemical.” Chemical?? do you mean hydrogen or oxygen?? hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound- but it’s 2 oxygen atoms bound to each other and another radical such as hydrogen. So, I suppose you are right about honey having the same “chemicals” that are in hydrogen peroxide. I bet it DOES have Hydrogen and Oxygen in it, I wouldn’t call it a “chemical”.

I wouldn’t put it on wounds unless protected from flies and insects, however.

I’d make a cake out of eggs, honey, and flour before I’d put it on my face.

All this great info… to the gal who would make a cake and not put it on her face, too bad-FYI your skin is the largest organ of your body. If you put it in your belly it is ok for your skin 😉

One thing you do not cover is that in addition to the benefits of honey there is a lot of benefit from controlled bee sting therapy. Every bee keeper that I have ever met know of this fact and most have bee sting therapy sessions free of charge. Bee stings work wonders for those that suffer from MS and lot of different diseases especially those that are nerve damage related. I keep bees in order to have them close so that I can have them sting me. I started out with one or two and worked up to taking about a dozen stings every two or three days. I have nerve damage in my hand that causes me sever shooting pains as well as constant “pins and needles” pain with my hand feeling like it is frozen all the time. The bee stings warm it right up and get the blood flowing and enables me to use my hand and have a lot less pain. The pain from the stings is nothing compared to the pain it relieves.

The way I understand it, mother nature developed the bees as they evolved where their venom contains chemicals that repair any damaged nerves so that the message of “stop stealing my honey” would get to the bears brain in time to save the hive. I just know that it helps mine. Research “bee sting therapy” and MS for a more testimonies.

For more information, you can always “Bing” it (I don’t Google since they are in bed with our Gov.) For local info, check with your local bee keepers. Most rural areas have bee keeping groups or organizations. Check with your local healthfood stores. They will be able to help direct you in most cases, or you can even check their shelves for any local bee keepers that supply their honey.

Check with “the bee sting lady”. If you search for “bee sting therapy” she will most likely be at the top of the list. Her testimony was the catalist that got me started initially.

Fyi Vinnie, google is known for keeping track of all searches, as is almost all other search engines, except the one i prefer to use. It’s called Startpage aka ixquick, but it’s the only search engine that does not record your ip address, however they still use google but block the ip address so your search is not recorded.
I know this ain’t honey related but i just wanted to pass on that nugget to anyone who might like to keep their searches private.
          Great honey info!
Oh yeah, i don’t know what this gals ailment was, but she was putting pure, raw, local honey right in her eye for something so that’s my 2 cents added!
          Thanks!

honey is excellent for wounds that will not heal like bedsores. also it will help heal recluse spider bites. clean with peroxide daily and apply a bandage with the honey. it will kill the spider venom

You talked about honey and lemon for sore throat and colds. I’m sure this works but another solution that works, (and I’ve tried it and it’s amazing) is honey and apple cider vinegar. 2 tsp of each in 8oz of warm water does the trick. Just sip it during the day, or if you are hurried, just drink it down. It works great!

Another thing is it makes a delicious breakfast or snack. Toast your favorite type of bread and toast it, (I like it with raisin bread). Spread a little coconut oil on your toast, then honey, then sprinkle cinnamon! Delicious! I never would have thought that I would like it but it’s yummy!!! If you don’t have or like coconut oil, it’s great with just the honey and cinnamon!
