If you’re lost in the woods, a compass can be a lifesaver. With it you can figure out which way you’re going and make sure you stay on course. But only if you know how to use it. Fortunately, using a compass is pretty simple once you learn the basics.

A compass works by suspending a needle with one magnetized end so it can spin freely. The magnetized end is attracted to the earth’s magnetic North Pole, and will spin so that it always points to the North Pole. Once you know which way is north, it’s easy to find the other directions.
