WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO FREEZE DRY YOUR FOOD FOR FOOD PRESERVATION:

  • Food that you'll freeze-dry (fruits, meat, etc.)
  • Tray (if it doesn't come with the freeze dryer)
  • Freeze Dryer
  • Moisture and oxygen proof containers (Mylar bags, mason jars or cans)

Step 1: Prepare The Food

The first thing you need to do is choose the kind of food you want to freeze dry. It would be best if you pick food that has a high amount of water because their composition will stay whole after the freeze-drying process is done. Fruit such as berries, bananas, and apples and vegetables like potatoes, parsnips, and carrots are some of the ideal food to freeze dry. On the other hand, if you're going to freeze dry meat, it should be done right after it has been cooked and cooled.

Step 2: Put The Food On A Plate Or Tray

After choosing the right food to freeze dry, it's time to place them on a tray or a plate. Spread them evenly on the tray so they won't clump together.

Step 3: Put The Tray On The Freezer

Place the tray in the freeze dryer where they are frozen to -40 degrees Fahrenheit or even colder. The freeze dryer creates a powerful vacuum around the food after it is frozen. Then the ice turns into vapor and evaporates when the food is slightly heated.

Step 4: Put Food In Air-Tight Containers

Put the freeze dried food in moisture and oxygen proof containers such as mason jars, Mylar bags, or cans. Don't forget to use an oxygen absorber to guarantee freshness until it is opened.

Add Water To Regain Freshness!

To reconstitute freeze dried food, you need to pour a little amount of boiling water over the food to regain its freshness, flavor, and appearance.
