Dave Canterbury opens up about Dual Survival… Sort of and a final review of season three

I don’t know how I missed it!

Back in January I posted my review of Dual Survival Season 3, where I gave you my view on Cody Lundin’s new companion for the show, Joe Teti.

Click here to see the original article.

I don’t know how but I managed to miss it until now but a few days before I posted my review, Dave actually released a video on his youtube channel.  He  doesn’t go into a lot of detail about what happened but basically says that he did embellish his resume when he sent it in to the Discovery Channel.  Check out the video below

Now I noticed on the youtube page itself, Dave has closed the comments section so that no one can express their opinions on the matter, but I wanted to open this up for discussion, what do you think of dave’s apology?

Leave a comment below and let me know.

P.S.  Just a quick update on my review to Dual Survival Season 3 with Joe Teti:

Just like I thought would happen, they have began toning down on how Joe reacts to the various situations presented to him.  In the last couple of episodes in particular he has really began to calm down and take more of a back seat in the show.

The chemistry between Cody and Joe, while seeming to be a little easier, doesn’t feel the same as it did with Dave.  Some of Joe’s aggression seems to be rubbing on on Cody as well, as he now seems more apt to laugh at Joe and walk away than attempt to reason with him.  There is so much less banter and comradery between the two of them that most of the episodes are left in dull silence that not even the editor can remedy.  They seem to  spend more time in separate interviews than they do on screen together. With last weeks season finale over over and done,  I am still a little disappointed with the show.  My opinion is that, even though I love this show if things don’t pick up, we may find ourselves with yet another casting call for season 4… *

As of right now I can’t find any information on whether or not there will even be a season 4, can anyone point me in a direction that might shed a little light on that?

*I am speaking strictly on the entertainment value, I know a lot of people will get defensive of Joe Teti, strictly because of his military background and service to our country.  I am not denying that he has done great things and has survived in worse situations than most people would imagine… But  not every mechanic makes a great salesman

I find Cody and his style repulsive. Dave made the show interesting and made Cody’s attitude a little more bearable. After his departure, I watched two episodes and then dropped the show from my schedule. I wish Dave the VERY best, and I don’t really think he needed to apologize.

I agree!! I like Dave and was surprised when I was browsing thru the channels and saw “the new guy”…..No disrespect to him, but ALL of the episodes I watched, Dave KNOWs what he was talking about and I ALWAYS learned “something”…..NO, NO APOLOGY NECESSARY! Best of luck to you Dave!!!!

The show was finally so enjoyable to watch with the mutual respect and friendship that Cody and Dave developed. I wish they’d get him back. No-one cares about his initial resume’. He’s just good.

The show was far better with Dave. His knowledge, his “can do” attitude, his gritty style cannot be beat. I will never forget the rain forest episode where he fashioned an arrowhead from a piece of glass and then killed a turkey with a bow. It was amazing.

I have all the respect in the world for Dave and Cody and Joe as well but the show to me is dead with out Dave. For me it was the chemistry between the two that made the show so GREAT!!! I am still in the dark about what has happened to make Dave leave.
I have read some diff-things about a lie here or there on his resume and I say to that so what?? What dose it matter if he fudged around with his resume?? What matters is that he knows what he is doing him and Cody made a great team So bring him Back

The turkey was black and not moving about, have you ever seen a wild turkey? While the show was much more entertaining with Dave the show blatantly said they “Presented” situations to Dave and Codi, in this case a farm raised turkey, more than likely pegged/tethered in place.

Watch some of the videos closely, they were in Haiti/ Dominican Republic and complaining about the hippie’s bare feet yet in one scene they show Codi in sandals while descending a hill, I’m sure they missed it during editing or it was a piece they took from another shoot. Please do not forget that this is a show to make money first and educate second. The show was great with Dave and Codi, but it was a show first and education second. They are set up to not fail, and while I have learned a lot from the show, I have not forgotten that D Channel is more about making money than anything, nothing wrong with it, but it is what it is.

I have known Cody long before he became well known from early backpacking articles by him. Had several very long conversations and can say he does practice what he preaches. I have seen him walking in downtown Phoenix in temps and are barely manageable in sandals. He is a very laid back person and extremely friendly. While I know Cody embellished his resume I find it sad that he was removed from the show. Part of me is still angry that he did with the so called stolen valor situation . He seems like a good guy. Just glad survivorman is back on and wish someone like ray mears made shows that are more prevalent in the U.S.

Cody’s expertise is in primitive survival. He isn’t your typical american hero. I’m guessing that’s what you people complaining are looking for. You probably think the series Siberia is real as well. Oops spoiler alert. Anyhow, Teti. Although, I respect his military background; he’s awful on camera. Who drinks their own piss to raise their morale?

        August 3, 2013 at 10:18 PM

Cody Lundin voluntarily goes barefoot in (theoretically) life-threatening survival situations. He’s not doing it to demonstrate primitive survival – he routinely indicates that his way “works for him”. It’s stupid, and it’s insulting. It is, quite literally, like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Worse. It’s like using the knife, knowing that the other guy has a gun, and leaving your gun tucked in your pants.

Cody’s gig is parlor tricks. (Look… I’ll eat bugs! Look, I can make a fire with sticks!) And Joe is absolutely unsuited for team exercises. He makes unilateral decisions, and does whatever he wants do to, without regard to the thoughts of his partner. That, plus his constant posturing and self-aggrandizement makes him unwatchable for me.

If I had to pick one of the cast to be with me in a REAL survival situation, there is no question it would be Dave. If I had to pick one to watch on television, there is no question it would be Dave. For either of those purposes, Cody would be better than nothing. Joe? He needs to be somewhere conducting black ops – with no one watching.

I don’t know exactly what Dave misrepresented, but he didn’t misrepresent his skills. If the “vision” for the show was to have one of the guys be like Joe, then I guess Dave had to go. But it’s a stupid vision, and I don’t want to watch it. And I don’t anymore.

          October 1, 2013 at 6:20 PM

Well put “I will survive”. I happen to like and admire Cody’s skills a bit more. I mean it’s really more than just rubbing two sticks together and his gatherer’s preference while to me is low return I think has taught me to look and eat as I move more. But alas.. the issue is what about Dave? I’ve quit watching the show since Dave’s demise. I believe that him and Cody made a dull subject somewhat entertaining. This producer has really ***ked up! I have since found the survival show with Mykel Hawk and his wife a very realistic (they even fail sometimes) scenario and quite truthfully I’d put Hawks skills up against Joe’s and Cody’s any day…. now Dave’s…. probably a draw!

That being said, and growing up in a pretty remote part of the country, I like Cody, and respect him. Don’t really know much about the new guy, and military stuff I dont know either.

Everyone with any experience outdoors learned something valuable from Dave. I like to think of it like this. If I never met or knew who Dave was and we were a team in a survival situation, we have yet to establish any trust. Ten times out of Ten, Dave would come through on the spot. You can Trust Dave with your life (Cody) and any dishonesty before you met, gets thrown out the window. Fact is Dave made the show entertaining and informational just by being Dave! I mean The Discovery Channel really pisses me off, Just Look At his Youtube Channel and pull your heads out your Monkey Shit ASSes and quit Hating on an over qualified (Yes I said it) over qualified Long Hunter. Stay boring cause I only needed to watch one episode to determine an epic failure for your future. Even if you bring back Dave, the only reason you might profit is because of Dave and discovery channel must hate that. Thus the Death of a good show that could only get bigger and better left alone. If something works, why feel a need to “fix it” only to destroy it? PATHETIC Excuse to take what fans want and thats Dave and Cody. Dave could of been a JOBLESS HIPPY for all i care, he was beyond what Duel surviver NEEDS to Succeed.

I am sure that every producer at Discovery has embellished their resume to some degree to get some upper hand in a casting call. Dave was not lying about his military service to get some benefit onward, he was simply playing the hollywood game. Supposedly Joe Teti’s military service is even more in question, and is a particular issue with Mykel Hawke who is a veteran and had another show on Discovery.

Dave was way funnier, and knowledgeable regarding outdoor skills. The show is now recycling scenarios and I don’t see another season being able to generate as much viewership.

      January 24, 2014 at 2:33 PM

Why? Cody is not a fraud like Dave is. And that’s the point. The man committed fraud just to get in TV. Cody didn’t, nor did Joe. Dave needed to go into it more than he did. He needed to admit FULLY what he did and the why of it. No, Dave Canterbury is only in it for the money and the fame. And that just makes me sick.

Oh yeah, and it is a personal matter. I proved him wrong on a point (steel will will ignite with flint and steel if it is 0000), he never allowed my video response and didn’t admit to being wrong or gave credit where it was due. The man is just a complete ass if you ask me. People need to look elsewhere for competent tutelage on bushcraft and survival.

Dave is a bastard who didn’t just embelish his resume he changed ibformation on his DD214. For those of you who probably don’t know what that is, it is a military reocrd that states training, MOS ect… What he did by LYING about his military information is a violation of the Stolen Valor Law. It could very possibly end in a fine and or imprisonment if it were deemed an extreme case.
He has lied about his military service and he has plagerized several authors as well as The Boy Scouts of America. His 10 Cs of Survivability is almost a direct copy of The 10 Essentials every scout is required to have. I had a run in with Dave at the Indianpolis Boat Sport and Travel show. If I ever see him in person again I will not be as tolerant of his bad attitude. If it wouldn’t have been for women and children being present he would have had his ass kicked that day!

I’ve watched some of your Youtube Pathfinder videos, and always found them to be informative. I am not exactly clear on what or how you embellished your resume? Like the person above I am not sure it matters much. You are certainly not the first person in the entertainment industry to have done that. I can think of one person in particular that lost a food related show on a cable network, only to be asked back because the successor host was terrible for ratings. Clearly that has happened with Dual Survival as well. I stopped watching the show after watching that Joe and Cory bicker about drinking urine!!!

Hi I agree, I used to love the show with Cody and Dave. I have seen it now with Cody and Joe and I see no teamwork but a lot of disagreement and bickering. Its called Dual Survival but they are not in war only with each other. And the show where Joe did not want to drink his own urine, if thats what it takes to survive you do it, I have seen Michael Hawke do it. But I wish Dave the best and as for the show, I think I will Survive without it.

I think the show is still good no matter whose with Cody. I like Joe Teti and I respect him. I’ve watched the previous seasons as well, and I can’t say that I dislike Dave. He and Cody worked well together. I respect Dave for being honest and saying he did embellish his resume. It takes a lot to admit you did something wrong. I find it funny that others precede to bash Joe Teti when all he’s doing is his best. From what I’ve read season 3 did extremely well in the ratings, so I don’t know where all of the negativity is coming from? So unlike many of you, I will continue to watch the show for season 4 and I really hope Joe Teti is the co-host with Cody.

      Agreed!!

Have some respect for Joe. He is a true american hero and deserves that.. its really true what they say about people and change and its quite sad. CHANGE CAN BE GOOD SOMETIMES PEOPLE!! i dont see why no one seems to want to give the guy a chance.. and now as far as dave I also agree that Dave really didn’t need to apologize.i

    • IWillSurvive

      August 3, 2013 at 10:29 PM

You may respect Joe, but if you were in a survival situation, would you pick him to be with you? A guy who says, “It’s my way or the highway”? A combat operation? Sure. But that’s not what the show is about. Two knowledgeable people working together have a much better chance to survive than two people acting as individuals.

But if we’re being honest, would you really want to be in the wilderness with a guy who has an opportunity to wear shoes, but won’t? If you’re sensible, the answer is a resounding “No”. Cody seems disgusted that Joe takes unnecessary risks (with good reason), but he refuses to admit the totally unnecessary risks in going barefoot in the wilderness. Stupid decisions turn you into buzzard food.

      • Survival Student

        August 15, 2013 at 10:18 PM

Yes I agree with you. Cody is not logical in that he wants to ignore the fact that shoes were developed for a reason. I think Dave said it best in the episode “buried Alive” when he said (coming out in 10 degree weather in shorts and no shoes there has to be something wrong with your head). I am so sick of hearing about Cody,s mitochondria kicking ass (who cares). And have you noticed how many things Dave had to show Cody how to do. I am guessing Cody thinks he is one great survival expert because he wrote that 98.6 degrees book and it sold prety well, well so did pet rocks, because people will buy anything. As far as a survival expert I rate Dave and Mike Hawke equal and close to the top of the list. Cody did fail getting primitive fire on a few shows, where Mike was in the extremely humid and wet Amazon and was able to start a primitive fire so in all truth Mike is better at primitive fire than Cody. On hippo Island Cody bitched and cried about Dave drinking the water because elephants were crapping in the water, then Cody tore elephant crap apart with his hands,(no hand sanatizer)and cracked the nuts in it open and ate them, so what was the difference? Then he ended up drinking the water also. In the episode Adrift I started to respect Cody when he built that water distiller but lost it when he cried about Dave getting some saltwater in the water. Why, because when its very hot and you are sweating heavy the expert advice is to drink a lot of water and take salt tablets. You can add up to 10% salt water to fresh/plain water and drink safely. If Cody is such a “survival expert” why didn’t he know this?

I really wish all of you shoe wearing people would grow up. If you KNEW anything about shoes, you’d realize they are only WORSE for your health and can produce body aches later in life. Do your homework, READ the research behind walking barefoot, until then keep your mouth shut because you all sound so stupid bashing Cody for not wearing shoes.

Yes shoes have their moments of usefulness, did you forget Cody made sandals in an episode? Did you also forget that the discovery channel even points out that according to research we “ALL had healthier feet 2000 years ago before shoes were invented.”

Use your brain please, shoes are a scam, and they sell them to you by playing on your fear of “stepping on a piece of glass.” So if you’re afraid of cutting your foot then are you too stupid to watch where you walk?

I am a teacher, and I know other teacher’s whom live in Southeast Alaska and never wear shoes, I have been barefoot myself for almost two years now, and I have only injured my foot once, a minor cut at that. Quit insulting Cody’s intelligence because YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND.

As far as Dave being smarter? Yeah, if you want to rely on society. Dave doesn’t know how to live without material objects. He needs his knife, his magnesium bar, or a plastic bag to hold pee in to refract light. My point is that Dave can live off of societies trash, Cody can live without the clothes on his back, who is smarter in that situation for being stranded in nowhere? I’d gladly trust the barefoot guy who doesn’t need trash from a society that is destined to fall.

I completely agree with you. I’m glad somebody stood up for Cody and pointed out the facts about being barefoot versus wearing shoes. I also think that Cody and Dave together made a great team and part of that was due to the fact that they came to respect each others’ differences. They both have something significant to offer in educating people about survival and I think it’s a shame that they won’t be doing it as a team anymore. I personally don’t like the show without Dave but not because I don’t like Cody or the new guy. I just don’t like the relationship between the two.

You’re a teacher of what? Yoga? Pole Dancing? Boy Scouts? Because it’s obviously not math, podietry, paleontology or history. Or even a working knowledge of any of those subjects.
2000 years ago (which puts in the middle of the Roman Empire) human beings were wearing shoes, all different kinds depending on the climate you were in.
No one knows when shoes were invented. Probably the same time Neanderthal man stepped outside and went, “Fuck it’s cold!” and decided to invent clothing.
Archaeological evidence supports that Neanderthal Man wore shoes predating human existence. Archaeological evidence actually only supports that we had healthier feet in “primitive” times for the sole purpose we were always on our feet. Early man has been proven to be primarily nomadic until the age of agriculture, and we weren’t riding animals yet. So we walked or ran everywhere which would lead to the development of stronger healthier feet.
Archaeological evidence of people’s bodies in the primitive era of man only supports the fact we were mobile (so mobile that we ran down and spear hunted most of our meat, which would require movement over various terrain at high speed, which would would then infer the use of some form of foot protection), we had leaner, thinner builds (meant for running, which Cody has chosen to ignore), and that we were as a species predominately right handed.
Primitive man would also build, carry and discard (trash) tools and other goods or re-purpose those things (recycled trash). The same thing that Dave did… hmm strange.
I respect Cody for the choices he’s made and applaud him for making those choices and standing up for them but don’t for one second try to tell me or anyone that what he has chosen to do has any kind of factual merit, because all historical record (written, carved or painted) and archaeological evidence points to the contrary. Cody is very strongly opinionated and it can be infectious, and I don’t care how he or anyone chooses to live their life. But to refute actual facts and historical evidence in favor of opinion is crossing the line into blatant ignorance.
In the argument for or against Dave, he could stand on his own without fluffing his resume, he shouldn’t have lied, end of argument.
I don’t care for the new guy’s attitude most of the time but the show still has merit. So I’m giving it more time.

I believe that with Dave on the show Cody seemed more impressive dave was constantly pointing out how difficult the things that Cody did were where is Joe is lifeless and boring and does not make an attempt to understand Cody’s ways at all and I no longer watch the show with Joe on there whereas with Dave and Cody there opposite personalities worked like a marriage where one was weak the other was strong and their beliefs differ but they came together to make their survival situations better I use to follow the show every single episode and no I cannot even watched a single minute of this shmoe that they have paired up with Cody dave was much more entertaining plus I believe him to be more skilled most people in my experience you’ve been in the military who I myself was a Marine Corps officer tend to be more understated and pretend not to have to posture because they don’t need to reassure them selfs

Cody should have a show called “All the Ways I Know to Make Fire”. As far as hippy vs. military (being a veteran) I will always choose a more militant approach to survival and preparedness. Joe is only doing what he was trained to do, Cody is doing all stuff he has learned (trained vs learned, yes there is a difference) Also being a true American I have to be tolerant and respect the rights of hippy’s to be the smelly, free-spirit, sponges, soaking the sweat from the ass-crack-of-society people they are.

    • Myself

      October 11, 2013 at 2:40 PM

Wow, must you say that like a shoe wearing, material focused, disrespectful, skin head who deserves all of the future joint and back pain from wearing shoes like their retarded ancestors who were tricked into wearing shoes with fear?

By-the-way, I only put assholes in their place when they deserve it, I am as many call a “hippie” but I bathe often, I am a free spirit (unlike you, letting society make you say such nasty things to be “cool”), and I am “sponge” for knowledge and I learn from other’s mistakes (which is why I’m barefoot), and in my future community I’m starting with other’s, there won’t be any “ass-crack” of society for people to suffer in, I wouldn’t dare make a community as pathetic as America.

Take your “military survival” and shove it, because when my descendants meet yours. Mine will be the one’s that can roam God’s Earth with nothing on their back, and survive. Yours will be the ones that can never let go of a 50-100 pound bag where ever they go, and have no idea how to survive once their society and all of it’s luxuries fall.

Okay self-proclaimed hippie, what does “your society” have planned for those who have spina bifida, autisim, cerebral palsy, polio, multiple sclerosis, chrone’s disease, cancer, or any number of uncurable, barely treatable conditions that prevent living out side the “Evil American Regime”? Do you have a plan for medicine, or treatment, or provisions for these people who really had no say in how they get to live their life?

Kudos to you. I am from the same cloth as you with the exception that I do wear shoes. Cody has very good reasons for not wearing shoes and although it’s not for me, his body runs much more efficient due to his lack of footwear. I do love the show better with Dave. I don’t care about his embellishments, the information he gave was brilliant and he worked well with Cody. When joe drank his own pee even though Cody explained to him why you shouldn’t, he showed me he had no respect for Cody’s expertise.

Why is that whenever someone deliberately does something wrong they want to characterize it as a “mistake”? No mistake, he deliberately deceived to secure a place on the show.

    • Dan Steinwender

      April 20, 2013 at 9:31 AM

I think the mistake he referred to was in thinking that he would be judged like everyone else submitting a resume to land a great job. The reality is that we live in a world of hypocrisy where we expect everyone to be better than ourselves. This really becomes an issue when you step up on the stage except if your a politician or a hollywood celebrity or sport superstar. They get to screw up big and we let them carry on.

Completely agree. I enjoyed Dave on the show BUT… if any one of US lied to our job about our qualifications that gives our employer rights to terminate our employment on the spot (which they would usually do.) To be honest, the network even let him finish his contract of two years so they were being really nice.

    • Jeremy

      June 19, 2013 at 6:18 PM

You misunderstand what mistake means. A mistake can very well be a deliberate action. If you deliberately decide to do something, and it turns out to be the wrong thing, then it was a mistake. An accident on the other hand is not deliberate. Dave would be incorrect to say that it was all an accident, but he is correct in saying it was a mistake.

So what? He is still a GREAT survivalist and EXTREMELY smart in the wilderness. He still served in the military, he only lied about where he served and being a sniper. Big freakin deal. He didn’t deserve to be kicked off the show for it. How many people in this world lie to get a job, whether in entertainment or in actual life. HE MADE THE SHOW WHAT IT WAS. It’s called DUAL SURVIVAL for a reason and Cody and Dave made a GREAT team. I still watch it because I like the concept of the show, but Joe is and was not a sensible choice for Cody’s new partner and if Discovery was smart, they would bring Dave back ASAP because Cody and Joe don’t work well together at all. They have a great series going here and its a shame that they are ruining it by leaving someone on the show that just isn’t working out

I have to say that of all of the sins in the world…embellishing your resume has to rank rather low on that list.

After all, how many of us haven’t made ourselves sound a little better than we actually are on our resume…I know I have done it and anyone reading this has done it as well.

Dave screwed up…admitted it…and is moving on. So should the rest of us.

I will miss Dave on DS and wish him the best in the future.

    • Dan Steinwender

      April 20, 2013 at 9:12 AM

You nailed it Tony. As a business owner, I have seen many resumes cross my desk. Almost always there is doubt about the accuracy of these resumes. During interviews I have almost always been able to verify that the resumes were in fact “optimized” to be greater than life. Call it what you want but it seems to be the defacto standard. Resumes get embellished and sometimes to the point of severe exaggeration. I am not saying it is right to do it but that is the way the game is played. You either learn the rules and play or stay on the porch and watch. The “leaders” of our respective countries LIE every day to get into office and yet we do little about it but ping pong back and forth between the parties that offer us these leaders. We really need to stop being hypocrites.

If I had a guy who lied on his resume, but turned out to be really, really good at what I wanted him to do? I might ask him why he did it, but no way would I fire him. I probably would tell him to be honest with me in the future. But no way do I put someone inferior on the payroll to prove that particular point.

    March 24, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Everyone is missing the point….people say dave lied embellished exaggerated…fact of the matter is Cody was in some risky situations with Dave…Cody had to trust him with his life…for Cody to be blindsided by a breach of trust is inexcusable in life threatening situations….once u loose trust it not gonna want to put your life in someone’s hands…

    • Levi

      June 2, 2013 at 7:55 AM

Your being a bit corny kevin. I don’t think a poor boy’s attempt at making sure he got on the show by changing his resume a bit soils his entire character. Did you ever even see what he changed? It wasnt that big of deal, and he apologized on his youtube account. Dave Canterbury is highly skilled in everything outdoors with many talents. I honestly can’t think of how Joe teti increases the team’s chance of survival. People may not like to hear this but being a special force’s guy really doesn’t make a hill of beans of difference to mother nature. He’s been trained to kill people. Lundin and Canterbury are trained in self-preservation in nature.

You’re just regurgitating what Cody said. It’s making a mountain out of a mole hill. Wanna talk about trust? Cody was always yapping about safety yet he runs around barefoot in the wilderness. Who in their right mind would “trust” anything he says when it comes to saving your life?!? If going barefoot was all that, people would have never developed shoes to begin with.

i know nothing of the show, however don’t ever use your eating/drinking implements to make char cloth like in the video of his that comes up after his apology, especially with tee shirt material.tee shirts are sprayed at the factory with several different chemicals to enhance handling and sizing while being sewn, burning this material inside your food vessel will leave the traces of those toxic compounds inside even if the shirt has been washed 100 times.as to only making a tiny bit at once he is dead wrong as the more you pack your tinderbox with the better the char cloth will be.bad example of survival skill/lack of skill and knowledge.

Let me get this right…. You are in a dire situation and need water and heat to survive. So this is the appropriate time to be worried about trace elements working its way into your digestive track. I guess we should learn from this that it is much better to purchase our food from the grocery store where everything is verified to be safe from nasty pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and …. oh nevermind.

another dave video to not follow-NEVER,EVER use steel wool to clean any firearm as it WILL damage the bore with any amount of repitition.if the firearm is rifled it will start to abrade the rifling with the very first attempt,if a smoothbore it will start to remove steel from the inside of the bore changing chamber and bore dimensions.some folks do these videos and seem to be highly knowledgeable because they succeed in that video however not all of this knowledge is beneficial in the long run.as to the 8 in chamber adapters it could be considered a short barreled rifle because of the shoulder stock under sec. 922 r of the batfe code.always check the laws first before purchasing something like this.a chamber adapter that doesn’t bypass the chamber is definitely legal, once it passes the chamber and goes into the bore be careful as it depends on who the officer is and how much time and money you want to spend in court.

    • Dan Steinwender

      April 20, 2013 at 9:24 AM

Steel wool will eventually wear down another piece of steel. So will cotton if you give it enough time. Have you used steel wool to work a piece of steel? I have in a machine shop and it is sometimes used to polish a surface. Sometimes softer materials are used to work harder materials and they will remove micro media. The military used steel cleaning rods and brass brushes for a very long time to maintain their firearms. These devices can also damage a firearm eventually. Someone figured out that the firearm would likely be worn out from use long before the cleaning process had any impact. I suspect steel wool would fall in that category but YMMV.

      • MTN RNR 08

        January 29, 2014 at 8:06 PM

We don’t use steel brushes. We use brass brushes because brass is softer than steel and steel is damaging to the bore.

I tend to like Teti better, maybe just because I find his stubbornness and resolve to align with my personality, rather than Cody who I usually end up rolling my eyes at. No doubt Cody’s smart, but sometimes I think he’s spent too much time away from the real world. I guess my preference could have something to do with the fact that the very first episode I ever watched was from Season 3, and that got me hooked–so for me, Teti was the “original military guy”. I’ve got no beef with Dave though, I’m sure he’s got plenty of great knowledge and skills.

I’ve grown up in the woods camping, hunting, and fishing all my life. All I have to say is if I had to be stuck anywhere with either Dave, Cody, or Joe and depend on either one of them to survive I would want that person to be Dave out of the three. Cody just wants to pee on everything or drink pee, and Joe, well is just an idiot. Many of the shows I’ve watched old Cody ate well thanks to Dave and it wasn’t bugs or snails.

    • Drake Nightfire

      December 29, 2013 at 7:45 AM

You are sadly mistaken, Cody never peed on anything nor did he drink his pee, that was Joe. In a survival situation with nothing but what you can find , I would take Cody hands down. Yes, Dave brought back the food, but he also screwed up majorly a few times, such as the honeybee incident. He said straight out he didn’t know if he was allergic. That is a stupid move.

      • Bob

        April 14, 2014 at 2:11 AM

I think Dave and Cody made the best team. Joe’s personality was disgusting at the beginning of season 3. May 21, 2013 at 2:47 AM

Huge fan of Dave on the show’s first two seasons, and far prefer him to Joe. But Dave didn’t pad his resume with a title bump or stretch 8 months at a given job into a year or round up on how many people he managed or dollars he saved. Dave lied repeatedly over the course of several years – more than once on camera – about being a Ranger and a sniper. This didn’t start with Dual Survival; Dave had been doing it for years before the show. He fabricated details, experiences, and stories about his supposed service and repeated these lies over and over to God only knows how many people. Sometimes in the course of asking those people to pay him money to teach them skills he claimed he learned while stationed here or there. Dave committed fraud, plain and simple. Did it for years and it finally caught up to him. So please, don’t kid yourselves because Cody is a hippie or Joe is, well, Joe. Personally, I still loved him on the show and would love to see him come back, but can’t blame anyone for not wanting to work with him. I wouldn’t.

Well he has 2 full seasons of shows that you can point out all the mistakes he has made. What? you can’t! Plain and simple he knows what he is talking about, and that is what the show is all about, survival, so what does it matter how he got there as long as he is living up to and doing the job he was hired for? You can’t say the same about Cody read my comment to IWILLSURVIVE (above) and learn why Cody is not the “survival Expert” he claims to be. Yes he is really good at primitive fire and the desert but there are many things he plain and simple doesn’t know so Cody should have been the one to get rid of. Dave gives out free videos on his youtube channel with information and tips on survival because he cares about his fans. What does this say about what kind of man he is? And you wouldn’t want to work with him, this says a lot about what kind of man you are! Where is Cody’s videos for his fans?
Dave no apology necessary you have proven you are a survival expert and what kind of man you are.

  25. Marcel van den Bos

    May 31, 2013 at 3:59 PM

It takes humility and courage to admit your wrongdoings. Joe has learnt a lot of skills however the context is specifically in a military theatre. So this effects the way you would approach survival. Survival in a combat/war situation is completely different to one of being lost or involved in an accident as a normal civilian.

Joe displays more aggression with regard to temper and dialogue with Cody; his fellow survivor. It could possibly be his character but I would suggest this is more likely influenced by his training and experience with the military. I feel team work is missing; Cody just gives up where there are disagreements on what should take priority. The essential element required in survival is to work as a team.

Dave although having at times a different opinion still went with various suggestions simply to maintain peace and unity within the team. This created a calming atmosphere as they faced some tough situations. Now I see more tension and get more irritated with the antics of Joe. As others have mentioned I can also see this rubbing off on Cody; you see him exhibiting more “aggroness”, irritation and a huff and walk-away.

Cody provided a statement indicating a lack of trust because of the lies. Sure this can happen and if someone admits it and is geniunely sorry for it then that trust can be rebuilt. After 2 seasons of doing DS with Dave; is Cody seriously tryng to say he can’t trust Dave in a survival situation? A bit harsh. The episodes of the 2 seasons demonstrated Dave’s ability and experience. Viewers learnt and Cody also benefited from his skills.

Not to condone what Dave did but haven’t we all at some point done wrong things whether intentionally or unintentionally. Cody and Joe cannot deny this themselves … no exceptions or excuses to justify why the wrong was committed. Dave’s response indicates his humility and acceptance that it was wrong; no excuses etc. Surely he can be forgiven?

Yes he lied about his military service. He was not a Ranger, sniper, or Scout. He dishonored himself by pretending to be something he was not. He disgraced himself and dishonored those who actually paid their dues as REAL Rangers, Snipers, and Scouts. As a fellow vet, I respect his service, but stealing valor from others is unforgivable. I have watched every single Episode more then 20 times per Episode. The reason why I watched it so much was not just because I’m a Fan of Dave, but also because I wanted to see more into the show then anything. I said this before Joe Teti Joined, and I’ll say it again. No offense to anybody, but the show is not the same without Dave hands down if it weren’t for alot of his doings there would be no Dual Survival. That man took everything he knew and made it real despite the fact he fudged his resume to me he has way entirely more skills then Cody. Cody is a Smarta55 P.o.s. I think is head got way to big.Anybody in the right mind to provide for your Family such as Dave did will do whatever it takes. Dave if you see this please read it also, You earned my respect in more ways then just 1. I Don’t Care what anybody says bout what happened to Dave. What’s funny is he didn’t have the experience, but he sure did more work then Cody. God Bless your Soul Dave.

I’ve been watching Dual Survival since day one and the partnership between Dave and Cody was awesome. While I appreciate Joe’s service to our country he just isn’t Dave. I hate that he embellished his resume, I don’t think he really needed to do that. He is a great survivalist and I would put my life in his hands any day of the week. Maybe Dave can use the internet to run his own survival show I would watch it in a heart beat.

yeah I miss Dave… and the thing that ticks me off is HOW did Dave get on the show to begin with (regarding the embellished resume)? where’s the people that are supposed to be checking these thing BEFORE somebody signs on the dotted line? well THOSE are the morons here, certainly not Dave!

Embellished or not Dave knew his stuff… and went after it. he didn’t like to eat bugs so he went on about to change that (remember the alligator episode?). now this new guy may know his stuff too. but the commadre is just not there between the two. remember this is supposed to be entertainment as well as actually learning something regarding survival techniques. its just not entertaining any more. and I stopped watching it.

Dave’s apology is a necessary survival skill when you want to quit something that others want to continue. If you’re the type that doesn’t want to repeat yourself: why go on with another season that just repeats the previous… (or the more funny when you look at them as husband & wife: hey he wanted a new bitch …)

Anyway survival is not the issue man, cause we’re all gonna die.

If a TV show is very important actors have to go if they’re not right for the story…

But if the TV show is less important than the entertainment the story is altered so what ever the actors decide – come, go, die, different character – they’ll alter the story to fit the actors’ wishes so they’ll have “a good time” while doing it and keeping the viewers entertained, because it’s rolling…

Dave didn’t just embellish. It’s called stolen valor.he made it look like he was Special Forces when he was a mechanic. He was probably lying to his students and built his company on the lie. As a 26 year veteran I’m not the slightest bit offended if someone wants to exaggerate their service record (or even create one for that matter).

Dave has two essentials for his chosen field – a passion for the subject and excellent communication skills – he’s good on screen and you can’t buy that talent.

He also spots the flaws in commercial outdoor products and has the drive to create better ones for his Pathfinder store.

Keep going Dave – you’re an asset to our community!

Totally agree. Dave and Cody were the perfect duo and Dave’s expertise and persona were perfect for the show. I understand the upset some fans feel but the point of the show, and the reason Dave was great to watch, had little to do with what he looked like on paper. At the end of the day, he was able to give the audience the education and entertainment we wanted. There are lots of people who look good on paper but can’t do the job when push comes to shove.

    Dave C. is the best.
These reality TV shows are a disgrace, and total hypocrisy. They boot Dave off the air for embellishing his resume, but they allow idiots, morons, and charlatans on their other programs.
I know some of these shows are not on Discovery Channel, but just to illustrate what kind of farces are on TV and very popular, with no apparent controversy:
Ancient Aliens – 100% lies. 90% of the “experts” are quacks and loonies. Nothing anyone says on this show is true, and there is almost zero rebuttals allowed on this show. It’s horrible.
Pawn Stars – totally staged. Nothing you see on camera is real. These rare and valuable items might be real, but they are items that the producers bring into the show, for entertainment value. All of the comments and statements are scripted. This pawn shop NEVER gets items like this on a day to day basis, and 99% of the stuff they sell is just T-shirts and junk in real life.
I won’t even comment on the other crappy “reality” shows you see on TV. Total bogus nonsense.
The real fraud, fakery, deception, and exaggerations come directly from the Networks and the Producers. Yet no one takes them to task.

As an active service member I am repulsed by Dave Canterbury. He is an absolute disgrace to the uniform.. Not only was he not a sniper he was a cop, during a time much different than now. I think that he should be stripped of any and all credit for anything that he has ever done. Whats worse, is that being a self admitted liar people still think that its a good idea to pay him to teach them things about something that he has never done. Do you guys not realize that people go to prison for impersonating people that they are not. Joe may not be the best actor but I would listen to what he says before I would listen to anything that Dave ever said.

Dave Canterbury and Cody Lundin’s are by far the best combination for Dual Survival. Please ask Dave to return. He is very interesting and knowledgeable. Hopefully the series will continue.

    Dave,

You should never be ashamed of your enthusiasm. Your skill level is superior, regardless of your background. I hope you return to the show, and until then, I refuse to watch. I would like to also suggest possibly starting your own television series.

Joes not that bad! I miss Dave too but Joes aight. Better than weird fat Cody pretending like not wearing shoes is somehow ok!? I don’t care who you are, you get caught in the wrong situation without shoes, your done! That should never be taught, especially on a survival show!

What a shame that Dave was canned. I don’t care. Dave knew his shit. Whether it was 6 years or 20 who cares. Looks like i will stop watching. Cody is good, but the knew guy Joe doesn’t have the chemistry that Dave and Cody had. Producers & directors suck on these types of reality shows. GET DAVE BACK OR ELSE!

I just started watching the show on netflix and I find it very entertaining, informative, and interesting. I am very disappointing to see that Dave is the one that left the show. I truly thought they would get rid of Cody because he brought nothing to the table. The only the they say about him in EVERY episode is that he does not wear shoes! He always slows down the progress. Without Dave, that bug eater (Cody) would starve to death and get lost in his own back yard.

Discovery channel made a BIG BIG mistake when they dropped Dave off the show. Our family stopped watching Dual Survival after the new guy Joe replaced Dave. Who cares about Dave’s background. He was just that good and entertaining to watch. If Discovery channel wants their ratings to go up then bring Dave back!

Let’s not forget that this is TV show, and much like Discovery Channel’s Storage War and other programs, the whole thing is greatly biased toward entertaining.
Cody, we might like it or not, is an entertaining figure, Joe Teti, with all due respect for him and his service to the country, is another entertaining figure and I believe a trial to build another Mikael Hawke figure.
Unfortunately the fact that someone has been in the special forces doesn’t automatically qualify him for being the best in survival, Mike Hawke states that as well, deep survival knowledge doesn’t come from special operations alone.
This is all entertaining industry, point, the problem with Dave? The chap is too genuine, honest and no nonsense to be entertaining, at least in the Discovery Channel producers mind.
Unfortunately today we get a lot of entertainment an very little true survival knowledge passed on on TV, so when it comes to entertainment, the more at odd they are the better it is, knowledge is not the main concern.

I will take Cody, Dave or Joe, either one in a survival situation. All have skills and contribute to the show in their own way. Personally, I relate to Cody more so I am still a fan of the show and in a way miss having Dave as his partner.

While you can learn valuable info from watching Dual Survival, people need to remind themselves that this is entertainment, and not a competition. If your not entertained then change the channel. Looking forward to next season if there is one.

I’m really glad Cody is still on the show, but honestly, in my eyes the last season was just not as good as the first two when Dave was there. Really missing Dave, though I can’t imagine they’d let him back on the show (unfortunately).

I really enjoyed this show when it was with Dave and Cody. 2 scenes that I will always remember are 1. Dave killing the turkey with the improvised bow and arrow., and 2. Dave cutting deep into his arm with a knife and caulderizing(sp?) the wound with gun powder. I respect Cody and his experience, but I would always find myself taking Dave’s side whenever there was a conflict or disagreement. When I found out Dave left the show I was pretty bummed, he really was the star of the show in my opinion.

Since, Season 3 ended, I have been watching Dave’s youtube videos, which there are TONS of, so if you are a fan of Dave, I highly recommend checking out his youtube page.

i think he is extremely reckless at times like the episode in thai land where he leads cody into a cave with two shitty torchs that cave could have gone on for miles that was one of his stupid choices in a survival situation your trying to live not kill your self and rappeling down an icy cliff with paracord can do that i barely see cody do dumb stuff like dave did on the show and the fact that lots of you are complaining about the chemistry between cody and dave are not watching the show for what it was intended for i think lying about your military history is just sick and wrong i think alot of you have to rethink what survival is taking the longer route is better than the route that will likely get you killed if you make a mistake or equipment fails i think its a good thing hes gone

People who dis on Cody are ignorant, his primitive style is a lost art, if we forget the past and a disaster happens we have nothing but air to breath, might as well lay down out bodies and return them to the earth. It is stupid to hate a style. Cody expresses survival in the purest form and it’s as old as man kind itself. I bid anyone farewell who don’t understand primitive survival, and just so you know it’s not survival if you know it, it just means your well adapted to the roots we rose from.

Dave C, we both like Joe Teti, but he is not you !!!!!! I can hear an old favorite song from my youth, & loved it because it was being sung by it’s original group, or person. However it’s about the same with you & shoeless guy !!! LOL. saying joe is not cutting it like you & Cody did. I understand you guys saw things a bit differently, & both perspectives were just fine, but you still got along, & were commrades. Joe is so adamant about having his way, it’s obvious he needs a show all by his lonesome, or team up with Bear Grylls. But you & Cody belong together, as it was originally. Just sayin……….

I had no idea that Dave had left, man, well I haven’t seen the new episodes as I get them on NF so this was a surprise to me, the new guy? umm, looks a little subdued, if that is the word I am looking for but a given chance may be in order here to be fair.
As for Dave and Cody not getting along? at first if anybody was put in their situation you too would not get along all the time nor would you agree all the time, how boring that would be, in the end as long as each comes to an understanding AND a compromise and the job gets done then it was a success. I will miss Dave as I think he and Cody actually complimented each other, not sure about this other guy, but then again I don’t like change that much.

Whether Dave stretched the facts is water under the bridge. These moron execs took a hot TV Sho with a core audience and messed it up…..reminds me on when Coke changed their recipe and lost sales many years ago—-i recall that marketing exec was fired. This show will die off slowly without Dave. The key to the show was the “Oddcouple” approach to survival Dave and Cody had..now you have 2 complainers Cody and Joe wheras Dave was a do-er….In the Jungle episode you can still see on You Tube, Cody admits he was angry because he felt like a housewife. In teh LA. Gulf, Dave told Cody to leave his skirt home….It seems to me Cody is kind of a sissy and was getting upset by Dave’s hunter skills while Cody was the gatherer. I suspected Cody backstabbed Dave and there was a buyout w/a non-disclosure that forbits Dave from commenting..he obviously has counsel…I am sure they paid him off to advoid a defamation lawsuit which explains why Cody also says nothing…We all like Joe’s personally but he cannot fill Dave’s shoes….It just that simple.

My only comment is about hypothermia. When they say hypothermia will kill you,why walk bare footed in snow.Makes no sense to me.

      • Bob

        April 14, 2014 at 4:31 AM

Having exposed feet might contribute to hypothermia, but if you had adequate clothing over the rest of your body you might not become hypothermic (a lowering of your core body temperature), but if it is below the freezing point you would certainly put yourself at risk for frostbite (which mostly affects extremities). I would say the #1 reason for Cody to walk nearly always barefoot is to add interest to the show. I’ll be sticking to my boots–lol.

The thing I really enjoyed during the first two seasons was how two experts worked together, helped each other, and complimented each other – although they came from markedly different backgrounds, philosophies and experiences. Both Cody and Dave are very intelligent, well read and experienced survival experts. Each person has his strength. Cody has the edge with primitive skills (fire making, foraging for food, knowledge of botany). Dave is an awesome hunter, trapper, and knows rappelling, etc…

I don’t care of Dave embellished his resume. That is such a non-issue for me. But what does bother me – is how the producer of the show went so far overboard to find THE “ultimate GI Joe”. As IF finding a SpecOps guy was necessary for the success of the show. Or was it simply to function as a slap in the face to Dave Canterbury. The bottom line is – I don’t care what Joe Teti did in Afghanistan or Iraq. I don’t care how many insurgents he killed or how many different HALO jumps he made or how classified his anti-terrorist job were. I care about survival, primitive skills, bushcraft, etc… I want to see two people with a complimentary dynamic. And the show doesn’t seem to have that without Dave Canterbury.

What the heck is wrong with some of you…Dave is a liar. I could not care less about their “chemistry” being better or worse. If the show sucks with Joe; cancel it. The bottom line is that Dave lied and is, therefore, a liar. Ironic for a “reality” show.

I guess I look at it a little different then most of you. I watch the show for the life saving information. What do the Guy’s say on the show? “Put you’re differences aside and concentrate on surviving” not worried about establishing a man crush on the teachers! For those of you that don’t like this and don’t like that about someone besides you’re self. Did you ever stop to think that they may say the same about you? Just because you disagree don’t mean you’re always correct.

Dual Survivors should be exactly that two people surviving. Get all new people from time to time. Put an expert with a novice, see how that goes. Many scenarios that could be explored with this show. Dave was always great and needs to offer no apology. Joe is great in my opinion and I enjoy his contribution. Cody needs to go away with his bare feet and go on the “Lone Survivor” show. Cody is not a team player and often jeopardizes his companions through his stubbornness, rigidness, and lack of flexibility. I am sure that this show can be successful if it would just evolve and put on some shoes.

I could care less that Dave embellished on his resume, who doesn’t to some degree? He was knowledgeable, a definite survivalist, and they made a good team. I did enjoy Cody also, and I think they played off each other well, while not always agreeing with each other’s decisions, usually compromised for the team. Gave each other credit and played off each other’s strengths. If Dave did not know what he was doing, the first episode would have been a bust. The channel lost a good man and great show person.

How about this! Forget the past and lets move on all together to a newer and fresh direction of DUAL SURVIVAL 4.
Forgiveness is a great gift so freaking use it.
If a person doesn’t know how it means right after you tell them then the problem is the person that doesn’t understand it very well because they might like to live in the dark or their grudges.
Cmon now! Dual Survival made an impact in my life and I love all 3 of you guys.
Enough said, Why don’t we do an episode with CODY, DAVE and JOE. Just one if that’s alright with everyone.
    Just for the Dual Followers.
I think this episode if there’s one.. it will be a freaking jump star of the season 4. A highlight to all 3 awesome MFS.

    With love.

cody’s survival skills are kinda meh. walking around barefoot. isn’t too intelligent, where if even if pricked can infect with foreign virus’s… goes against survival 101. same with exposed skin the cold.. i think they keep cody b/c hes just more viewer friendly an there was obviously tension between him & dave about the ways of doing tings. so they do w/e cody wants… they should have kept the show the way it was or replayed cody. oh dave come help me from this snake so i can pick snails…
to me alot of the times when they needed to find direction food or outlay the strategy it seemed dave was more the dominate force. to myself….

“Served our Country”. I get so tired of that line. He served his orders, he served our executive office, and he did what he had to for HIMSELF, and HIS family.
I am not mad about it, and I do not hold any ill will. However, it does need noted, somewhere, and more often, that these guys are not laying down their lives, or risking them, for “us”. It is a career move (not just this show, keep up now) and it is done at the behest of transnational corporations, and government interest, whether the soldier being used is aware or not.
