How many times have you or your kids stood in front of the fridge, letting out all the “bought” air for minutes on end, only to end up picking up fast food because, and I’m quoting myself here ” We don’t have anything to eat”.
Not only is this terribly unhealthy, but it also wastes food, money and gas.
Even if you don’t have any emergency survival food stored away, the average American has between 3 and 14 days worth of food stored between their fridge and pantry and so much food is wasted each year simply because we don’t use it.
In fact, it is estimated that the Average American Family wastes over a quarter (25%) of its food each year. This can come out to thousands of dollars and frankly is disgusting.
But I’m no different, I have done the same thing.
The real key to fixing this problem is to realize the full potential of everything you have on hand.
The best thing you can do is learn to shop wisely but that is a whole other topic on it’s own.
I really wanted to focus on making the best of what you already have.
A few weeks ago after uttering the now infamous phrase around my house ” We don’t have anything to eat…” (which is really just code for I don’t feel like cooking), I decided that I was not only too lazy to cook, but I was also too lazy to get in my car to pick up food instead choosing to sit down and enjoy a bit of time on my pinterest page ( yes I am secretly a pinterest addict).
One of the first things that popped up was an odd little website called MyFridgeFood.com
This website lets you pick what you have in your fridge and then gives you an entire catalog of recipes that you can make with it.
Now I know this won’t make things any easier to cook food after a crisis, but what it will do is show you new recipes that you may not have thought of otherwise.
Think about it, typically when you want to make something you have an idea in your head of what you want, you look for a recipe book or look it up online and then have to check to make sure you have everything and if not take a trip to the store.
This takes all of that and reverses the process. You tell it what you have, and it tells you what you can make.
Without this I would have never known that you could make something like Coca Cola Chicken (not very good with Diet soda by the way)
So tonight as you stare longingly into your fridge and before you head to Taco Bell or McDonalds take a look at Myfridgefoods.com, save yourself some cash and check out this site, you may be surprised at what you can make.
Let me know the most oddball recipe this site tells you you can make with whats in your fridge.
P.S. the default setting on this is the quick kitchen. If you want to go a little more in depth in your recipe, click on the detailed kitchen button in the top right corner.
