Has Gerber Redeemed Themselves?
I am always on the look out for new items to add to my EDC.
The trick for me, is finding something that is useful and doesn’t make me stand out.
You may remember that a while back I did a review on the Gerber Shard.
Let’s say it did not exactly satisfy my needs.
It wasn’t a bad tool, but it wasn’t one that I’d want to depend on in a pinch.
Gerber recently released an all new line that is strictly geared (no pun intended) for daily carry.
They are calling it the Gerber GDC ( Gerber Daily Carry) line.

Each one of these tools runs around $12.00 directly through Gerber (except for the pocket knife it sits at around $32.00 which is still a good price for a pocket knife)

But if you really want one of these, I have actually found them to be much cheaper on amazon ( the pocket knife is only $24 and the other parts of the GDC are about $7.00 each)

I will say that I am not thrilled about the lime green accents on the tool, but that is just my personal preference about not standing out.
I like that the pocket knife can actually go into your pocket and I won’t have to be concerned about it scratching my phone or anything else, thanks to the rubberized coating.

I think I will stick with my Leatherman Super Tool 300. It is as large as I want to carry in a pocket tool but has all the tools that I need and with them all in one piece, I don’t have to carry them in separate pockets. To my way of thinking Gerber has created several tools in search of a problem, none of which is a real working tool.
Personally, with almost all bottles going to twist off caps, having a bottle opener is not really a concern, especially if one developed the social skill of taking off a bottle cap without a bottle opener when one was younger and drinking dozens of bottles at a time. A can opener is much more useful as most cans in the U.S. have not got the easy open tops that other countries have. While the can opener in the Leatherman will open most round cans, it will not open square cans. For that purpose I carry my very first survival tool, a Victorinox swiss army knife. That can opener will open every kind of can I have tried to open. Unfortunately even Victorinox doesn’t make that particular style of opener any more. The knife blade in my SAK is wobbly but the can opener is like the energizer bunny, it just keeps going and going with an occasional sharpening.

Not for me!! I can see some advantage for the Hook Knife on the key-chain but I’ll stick with my 2.5″ multi-use pocketknife.

mmmmmm na
to many “little bits”.
My kershaw skyline and my leatherman xe6 has all I need. I also use my 4sevens preon, 8 modes torch 0.2 to 180 lumens fits in what ever pants I am wearing (or my shirt pocket) and you do not know its there. having to hold the torch on would be inconvenient and leave you with one hand to use.
the allen keys I could see a bike rider utilise but the rest???????????

Really? How many zippers does one have to attach all these little “tools” to? The knife might be OK because of its lack of exposed metal parts (for pocket carry), but Leatherman makes so many great products already, certainly a person can find one of their “all-in-one” tools that will suffice. These products seem to be marketed for that part of the buying public that will purchase anything and everything that is tagged a “survival” product. Like I need a “hex tool” for EDC? Please…….!

Yup, Joe: a mountain bike IS a great thing for a prepper to have! But the Gerber tool has the hex blades exposed which makes it impractical to keep in a pocket. Also, it is too limited. I only paid $16 for my Winchester 30-000292 multitool that has a drive blade that takes 1/4″ bits and a cushioned holder for 9 of them. You can get nearly any kind of bit in 1/4″ hex that there is, including security bits.
The Ridge Runner 490 assisted opening pocket knife has a longer AUS8 SS blade than the Gerber, a belt cutter, glass breaker and waste band clip. In addition to being a very sturdy and sharp general knife, it’s also more capable in a self defense role. But it doesn’t cost $35, but $10 for two of them at BudK.
No point commenting on most of this line: they’re a joke.
